With the search engine market as an increasingly competitive place to operate, people might be beginning to wonder if Google can claim so much of the market for themselves for much longer. After all, in the boom and bust world of the internet, is any company capable of lasting?
Well, there’s certainly to evidence to the contrary at the moment. Perhaps the best way to judge this is to look at how Google claimed top position in the first place. With Adsense, Google introduced fairness to the internet – sites were given the chance to profit from their popularity with this simple system. In the wake of this clever piece of marketing, Google found their search bar integrated into more sites than any other engine.
The service that Google offers is second to none. By putting the customer first, with good supports and free, reliable service, they’ve ensured a loyal customer base – a difficult thing to do in the capricious world of the web. There really isn’t anything that could be reasonably improved about the service, so it’s unlikely that people would forsake it in favour or any other.
When you look at what they’re up against, there isn’t really much that anyone can do to topple Google. The company that should stand the most chance, in terms of their control of the web, and massive amount of resources, is Microsoft. However, one look at Bing shows how safe Google’s position is. Microssoft have made it as slick as possible, but that’s really smoke and mirrors compared to the fact that MSNbot just isn’t as good at supplying the right search results as Google is, or in making users feel valued.
Google’s lead in this area means that they’ve been free to pursue other endeavours. Their shock decision to go against Apple with their own smartphone operating systems shows how confident they are, and how they’re constantly branching into new areas too. With this in mind, it seems fair to say that Google isn’t set to topple any time soon, and rightly so.
