There are only a handful of actors in recent years who have won multiple Academy Awards for Best Actor or Actress In A Leading Role. One of those select few is Sean Penn. In recent years, Sean Penn tends to clean up when he is featured in a film at the award ceremonies; at the very least, he will usually be nominated.
I cannot say I am the biggest fan of Sean Penn as a person, but as an actor? There are few who do it better. Here are some of my favorite films that he has starred in.
It is tough to make a list of Sean Penn films without giving mention to the movie that won him his most recent Academy Award for Best Actor In A Leading Role. That movie was of course, Milk, in which Penn depicted the openly homosexual politician Harvey Milk.
Another fantastic Sean Penn film is the Clint Eastwood directed film, Mystic River. It came as no surprise that Sean Penn won the best actor award at the Oscars for his portrayal of Jimmy Markum. Tim Robbins also won big at the Oscars with the Best Supporting Actor award.
One other fantastic film starring Penn was Dead Man Walking. This movie is about a nun who empathizes with both a convicted death row killer and the family of his victim.
Another great movie that is worthy of mentioning is Carlito’s Way. Penn plays David Kleinfeld, a friend and lawyer of Carlito, who of course is played by Al Pacino. This film didn’t quite recapture the magic that Scarface had, but it came pretty close.
Another film starring Sean Penn that I absolutely loved was The Thin Red Line. This World War II classic was directed by Terrence Malick and also stars Jim Caviezel and Nick Nolte. An interesting fact is that this movie is based on an autobiography.
These are just some of Sean Penn’s best films and a select few of the many that showcase his incredible versatility.
