The first question most people ask upon encountering this markup language is what is Static FBML and how is it used? Facebook markup language is an application that allows static HTML code to be inserted into a Facebook fan page. It must be enabled for the Facebook page and then enabled for the tab it is to appear on. Additionally a business might choose to make a tab their landing page, insert images, videos from Youtube or another site and deliver their message to visitors in a unique way.
A regular Facebook page will not accept HTML code and hence is difficult to make it unique or to put an image in that is clickable to another destination. With this application an individual can upload a jpeg to their own website and then display it on their Facebook site. With static FBML enabled, an image can be linked to an external web address making the image clickable.
Static Facebook markup language is an option for some users on Facebook who understand or want to learn basic HTML or who have custom CSS they want added to their page. With this application the raw code without any extra characters must be put into the FBML box. Facebook markup language however is easier to use than HTML because no page headers or meta tags are needed.
There are some things to keep in mind when using this handy application to customize a social network page such as Facebook. Photos and movies can’t be over 560 pixels in order to fit within the allotted section on the tab. This should be no problem with most jpegs and videos. Javascript will not run from the markup box either.
Image names should be a single name with no spaces. If a jpeg name is two words, a hyphen should be used to avoid problems in display. While an image has no height limitations the larger a photo is, the longer it takes to load and scrolling is not user friendly.
The FBML application will normally accept simple HTML easily. When pasting code into the application box all tags should be closed and there should be no extra spaces or characters. Using the FBML application is as easy as using ordinary HTML but it requires clean code with no so called trash characters such as might be pasted from a WYIWYG editor.
Static Facebook markup language has made fan pages on Facebook a lot more configurable for the average business owner. Anyone who wants a unique look to their Facebook pages can use this simple application and add custom backgrounds, images, videos from outside sources and even more. This very popular social networking media is much easier to with the addition of the FBML application.
