Canadian researchers aim to build a more life-like robot, one piece at a time

It may not be all that human-like in its current state, but a team of researchers at the University of Ottawa are promising that this robot will get there sooner or later. Dubbed “Pumpkin,” the bot will apparently have its parts replaced piece-by-piece with more life-like counterparts over time, including parts that make use of a new artificial skin the researchers have developed. It not only includes the usual array of sensors that give the robot some degree of tactile sensitivity, but a network of tubes that circulate hot water to actually increase the temperature of the skin. According to the researchers, the eventual goal is to have a robot that appears and behaves naturally enough to make humans feel at ease when they’re interacting with it, but it might get a bit worse before it gets better — the next step is to replace the head with an anatomically correct model of the human skull, which will have the aforementioned artificial skin stretched over it.

Sony unveils Walkman B170 Series, promises to boost your bass

Sony has unveiled a slate of new Walkman MP3 players today, with the launch of its B170 Series. Available in both 2GB and 4GB varieties, these new devices weigh in at just 28 grams, but apparently pack plenty of punch, providing up to 18 hours of listening on a full charge. If you’re pressed for time, though, you can just plug it in for three minutes, which, in turn, will give you a full 90 minutes of listening time. There’s also an onboard equalizer, voice recorder and USB port, as well as a dedicated “Bass Boost” that, as you may have guessed, will boost your bass. No word yet on pricing, but Sony says its new Walkmans will be available sometime this month. Full PR after the break.

Fujitsu hasn’t been a major player in the mobile race on this side of the pond, but it looks like the company’s working to change that — better late than never, right? Last week we spent some time with its “world’s thinnest smartphone,” the F-07D, and now TechFokus claims to have gotten its hands on a Tegra 3-packing tablet from the Japanese manufacturer that’s supposedly set to launch in May. Aside from the aforementioned NVIDIA processor, the slate’s also said to come equipped with an “HD” (1280 x 800) display, 16GB of onboard storage and the usual front and rear shooters, at 3 and 8 megapixels, respectively. The tablet, dubbed Stylistic m532, is expected to carry a €499 (around $630) price tag, and although it is currently rocking Honeycomb, it’s expected to hit the masses adorned with Ice Cream Sandwich. By the looks of it, there’s nothing to write home about here, but you can be the judge by checking out the video after the break.

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It’s not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal – but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn’t matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia’s creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

MyYearbook Hits Half A Million Daily Mobile Users, Launches iPad App

It’s hard being a social network not called Facebook, but myYearbook isn’t one of those erstwhile rivals being sold off for assets. Instead, it’s been seeing strong mobile growth and revenue growth over the last year, building on its $100 million merger with QuePasa in July. Expect both to accelerate with the launch of its new iPad app today (available here). The company is now reaching half a million mobile users daily across major operating systems, chief executive Geoff Cook tells me, with 200 million (unduplicated) monthly sessions in total. Android has grown to be the largest, beating iPhone usage by two to one. The set of mobile app developer acquisitions that the company did earlier this year seems to be paying off.
