Google increases the free disk space from 5 GB to 15 GB and cuts substantially in other Google Drive cloud storage plans to start a new race for a price cut.
It was announced by the search engine giant on Thursday, March 13, 2014, that to make the cloud storage more competitive and affordable, the company is going to reduce the cost substantially. Meanwhile, the company also announced the increase in the disk space for basic (Free) accounts on the Google Drive cloud storage.
This announcement was made a few weeks after the declaration of Eran Feigenbaum, the director at Google Apps that, “the cloud can be as safe as — or in many cases, safer than — storing data on-premise.” After having received a bad impact of the NSA spying scandal, the whole cloud computing industry is taking care to downplay the apprehensions of the customers.
In a blog post, the director of product management at Google Corporation, Scot Johnston, wrote about this reduction in the prices of cloud storage services, “Today, thanks to a number of recent infrastructure improvements, we’re able to make it more affordable for you to keep everything safe and easy to reach on any device, from anywhere.” He further added that, Google is trying not only to make the cloud storage services competitive for the customers across the globe, but also trying to improve the security and user experience for Google Drive.
While talking about the details of the plans, reduction in cost, and increase in cloud storage resources, it was explained that the disk space for free accounts on Google Drive has been increased from 5GB to 15G; this increase does not count for the Google documents such as, data sheets, documents and presentations. The paid tiers have also reduced substantially in terms of cost and increased substantially in terms of resources, for example – 100GB would be available for just $24 per year down from earlier cost of $60 per year. On the other hand, 1TB for $120 per year is down from $600 per year. Another storage tier of 10TB is now available for $1200 per year with many additional industry grade features.
After this substantial cost reduction, and the increase in cloud storage resources has put the Google Drive well ahead of almost all providers in the marketplace.
