iCloud climbs to 85 million users

It seems like only yesterday Apple unveiled iCloud to the world at WWDC, just a puff of vapor. Now look at it. The company has just confirmed the service has swelled to 85 million users as part of its Q1 2012 earnings call. That’s more than twice as many iPhones as it sold in the same period, but of course it’s worth noting that iCloud is, of course, free, so there’s no penalty in people sticking their head in and seeing how things feel.

Nope, we’re back this Friday with the first Engadget Show of 2012, and it’s going to be a fun one — we’ll be taking a look at the biggest gadgets, interviews and stories to come out of this year’s CES and offering up all sorts of surprises.

Facebook In Brazil: A Big Ending To 2011 Finally Pushes It Past Orkut

First there were the stories about Facebook taking over your college campus, then it was your high school or workplace, then your country… now the stories are starting to be about how Facebook has used up all the new users and only has engagement left to gain. But that’s in older markets like the US. The company is still growing worldwide every month on its way to a billion users, and it’s because of places like Brazil. In 2011, according to a new study out from leading web measurement firm comScore, Facebook added nearly 24 million new users in the country. In December it pushed past incumbent Orkut to reach 36.1 million monthly uniques. The Google-owned social network isn’t seeing any drop-off, though, in contrast to US incumbentÂ MySpace’s fateÂ – and in contrast to India, Orkut’s other big market that wasÂ lost to Facebook years ago. Instead, Orkut just grew slowly from 32.7 million to 34.4 million in Brazil during the year.

Google launches PSA-style ‘Good to Know’ ad campaign, wants to keep us safe

Google’s no stranger to privacy-related controversy, which may explain the motivation behind its latest ad campaign. On Tuesday, the company will launch a series of ads across major newspapers, magazines and billboards, as part of its new “Good to Know” initiative, designed to make the internet “a safer, more comfortable place.” According to Google, these ads will offer tips and advice on how to secure your personal information online, including details on how to protect your passwords from web predators. The entire campaign has a distinctly PSA flavor to it, though there’s also a different subtext at work here, since Google is effectively branding itself as “the one you can trust.” There are certainly some who would dispute that, but at a time when most privacy concerns are focused squarely on the government, it may be a good time for Google to crank up its PR machine. BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

A leaked early version of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won’t get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer — only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that’s really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There’s no guarantee this app hasn’t been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that’s exactly what’s going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It’s a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won’t be invited to the dance until a bit later on.
