In 1998, two Stanford students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page believed that they could create a search engine that based its results on the relationships between Websites relevant to what the user is searching for. This was an improvement over existing methods at the time. The number of times the keywords appeared on the Web page was the over-riding factor. Another factor, however, was any back links the Web page had which was a system known as Backrub.

They added a new element to their search features in 2000 with their Google Adwords sponsored advertising programme. They would set up and manage an advertising programme on behalf of their clients for a monthly fee. They would be able to estimate the cost per click their client would have to pay based each time their targeted keywords were clicked. The page’s clean appearance based around their text-based advertising gives a the page a decent loading speed and was admired by its loyal users.

Google is still most commonly known for its search facility and PageRank plays a big part in delivering results to its users. It is based on a series of algorithms and assigns a ranking position to al relevant Web pages. This is what makes it different from standard SEO practice.

There are guidelines which Webmasters can refer to ensure that Google crawls, indexes and ranks their site. Although these guidelines are made known, Google are very secretive about how they assign PageRank. This is to avoid any abuse of the system. They do admit that the algorithms they use are based around back links.

Google has developed into far more than just a search engine. They have not only developed their own services but have also acquired other Web companies such as YouTube and now they offer video sharing, email and much more. They have now also expanded into radio advertising and offline publications to encompass almost all forms of media.
